The town is an important oyster port of Marennes-Oléron basin.The ancient walled city lies below its citadel a fortified structure completed by Vauban. Formerly the residence of the governors of Oleron, today it is a major economic center of the island. Very touristy, its historic center is made up of traditional houses lining the streets intersecting at right angles, forming a large pedestrian area. Former oyster huts, renovated they now house the workshops of artists and craftsmen.
